He was taken to the Beijing Children's Hospital for emergency treatment, which failed to save him. The hospital certified that he was "dead on arrival." He was cremated on June 7 at Babaoshan and his ashes are kept at home.

Circumstances of DeathWang left home with a camera at 11 p.m. on June 3, 1989. In the early morning of June 4, he was shot at the south entrance of Nanchang Street. The bullet hit him in the head. Troops prevented a medical emergency team from giving him treatment. He died two or three hours later. Together with other corpses, his body was buried in front of Beijing City No.28 Middle School, to the west of Tiananmen Square. On June 7, due to the pungent smell of these corpses, the school complained to the authorities and the bodies were exhumed. Since Wang had been wearing army clothing, he was thought to be a soldier of the martial law troops. His body was therefore taken to Huguosi Hospital and was located by his family on June 16. On June 26, Beijing Public Security Bureau issued a certificate stating that he had "died when outside," making it possible for his body to be cremated at Babaoshan. Ashes of his remains are now in the Remains Hall of Wanan Public Cemetery.

When he was crossing the road, he passed over the red enforcement line and when he failed to heed the "stop" shout of the martial law troops, he was shot dead by a bullet in the back which came out through the chest. At about 4:00 p.m., the Public Security Bureau, having found his student ID on his body, informed the university to collect his corpse.

He was hit in the back of the head by a bullet, and also had gunshot wounds in his shoulder, ribs and arm. After he felt to the ground, he was stabbed with a bayonet in his belly, as he had a two-inch long knife wound, and there were knife cuts in the palms of his hands. As an old person was taking him to the Posts Hospital, he told this person what university he was at and then died. On the morning of June 4, Professor Jiang Peikun, while searching for the body of his son, discovered Wu's body in the Posts Hospital. Jiang was entrusted by the hospital to bring the name list back to school. After cremation, Wu's ashes were taken back by his parents. Wu participated in the students' hunger strike for five days.

The soldiers fired at the people four times and Yu was among the first group who were hit. A bullet pierced through his left lower ribs and came out through his right upper ribs, injuring eight of his organs including his liver, kidney and lungs. His spinal column was damaged and bones were broken. He underwent four major operations in the Xiehe Hospital, including having one of his kidneys removed. His fever did not go down and the 20 days of efforts to save his life were in vain. He eventually died in the hospital on June 30.

In a spray of gunfire, many people at the side of the road were hit. Both Qian and Yuan were hit in the abdomen by bullets, and were taken to the Railways General Hospital. Because one of Qian's arteries had been severed, he died in the hospital on June 5. His ashes are in Suzhou.
