After getting off work at 7:00 a.m., he walked to the main gate of the factory to buy breakfast and encountered a large group of military vehicles speeding towards him. There was no way to cross the street, so he just waited to the side. At that time, one military vehicle rushed toward the crowd, killing three people and wounding many more. Wang Gang was one of the three killed. After crashing into the crowd, the soldiers left in a different vehicle. Outraged, the people set fire to the abandoned vehicle. Wang's internal organs were injured in the crash, and he died at the scene. His body was sent to Chuiyangliu Hospital. His remains are buried at Jinshan Cemetery in the western suburbs of Beijing.

He was sent to Qianmen Hospital and then transferred to Tongren Hospital. He lost too much blood and died. He was the first June Fourth victim to die at Tongren Hospital. His ashes are kept at Foshan Cemetery in Changping County.
