This poem by Liu Xia, written in 2010 for the then detained Liu Xiaobo, was circulated online on July 14, 2017, the day after Liu Xiaobo died of liver cancer.

I know, one day, sooner or later
You’ll leave me
And walk alone down the path of darkness

I pray for that moment to reappear
To look at the picture in my memory
And hope that I, in the picture,
in a state of stunned terror,
Will emit light

But I couldn’t do it
I just held my fist tight
not letting any bit of strength to slip from my fingertips
