“Why I Withdrew from Ding Jiaxi’s Case”—Statement by Lawyer Cheng Hai

January 27, 2014

Citing procedural violations by the police, procuratorate, and the court, Cheng Hai (程海), one of the defense lawyers for Ding Jiaxi (丁家喜), charged with “gathering a crowd to disrupt order in a public place” (聚众扰乱公共场所秩序罪), withdrew from the case during Ding’s trial at Beijing’s Haidian District People’s Court on January 27, 2014. In his statement, Cheng lists seven procedural irregularities in the case that he argues are in violation of the law. He says he will immediately appeal to higher authorities in the procuratorate and the National People’s Congress, in hopes that they will supervise and safeguard the correct implementation of the law.
