Complaint

March 4, 2012

[Forced Eviction Case] In this public statement, Ye Guoqiang detailed his grievances against various authorities resulting from the forcible eviction of the Ye family from their home in Beijing in May 2003 to make way for Olympics-related construction. This eviction of the members from three generations rendered them homeless because the compensation they received was not enough to buy a new home. Later appeals for additional compensation were unsuccessful, and Ye Guoqiang, out of frustration, attempted suicide by jumping from a bridge near Tiananmen Square on National Day in October 2003. He was later sentenced to two years in prison after a secret trial.

Ye Guoqiang’s brother, Ye Guozhu was found guilty of "picking a quarrel and making trouble" and sentenced to four years in prison because he tried to seek permission for 10,000 people to demonstrate against forced Olympics evictions in August 2004. On July 26, 2008, when he was scheduled to be released after his imprisonment, he was put under criminal detention for suspicion of gathering a crowd to disturb public social order.

In September 2007, Ye Guoqiang and Ye Guozhu's son, Ye Mingjun, were criminally detained on suspicion of "inciting subversion of state power" after protesting in front of the Xuanwu District Government building. While they were later released on bail pending trial, Ye Guoqiang remained under surveillance. In the past few years, Ye’s family has been unsuccessful in its attempts to seek just compensation.
