In 2012, Wang Dengchao (王登朝), a police officer in Shenzhen, was sentenced to 14 years after being convicted of “embezzlement” and “obstructing official business.” Wang and his lawyers contend that these were trumped-up charges.

Wang Dengchao previously caused a sensation when he reached out to thousands of security guards in attempts to organize a union. He was detained by the police on March 8, 2012, as he was preparing a rally to commemorate the 75 anniversary of the death of Sun Yat-sen, and, to advocate for social security, free medical care, and equal pension for all.

Wang is appealing the first instance verdict, and the appeal will be heard by the Shenzhen Municipal Intermediate People’s Court on February 7, 2013. Lawyers Li Jingxing (李金星) of Shandong Silu Law Firm and Li Jinglin (李静林) from Beijing Xinqiao Law Firm are representing Wang in the appeal.
