Human Rights in China (HRIC), a dynamic NGO dedicated to promoting and advancing human rights in China, is looking for a bilingual (Mandarin and English) Communications Officer at its New York office to work with the Communications Director.
About HRIC
HRIC was founded by Chinese students and scholars in March 1989. Its mission is to promote international human rights and advance the institutional protection of these rights in the People’s Republic of China.

Responsibilities
The Communications Officer will support overall media and outreach strategies. Areas of work and specific responsibilities:
Press & Outreach Work
- Draft press releases and other documents in English.
- Coordinate the press release production process in English and Chinese.
- Field press inquiries and set up press interviews for executive director.
- Field public inquiries.
- Conduct story tracking of current topics of interest.
- Assist in outreach efforts.
Translation
- Chinese-English translation and translation editing.
Research
- Prepare background material in preparation for press interviews.
- Perform other research work as required.
- Assist in preparation of technical reports.
Publications
- Assist in editing of articles for publication in bilingual journal.
- Manage production process of bilingual journal and other publications
Qualifications
- Commitment to HRIC’s mission and to working in a high-energy, collaborative NGO that insists on the highest professional and public-interest standards.
- At least five years of work experience in journalism (preferred) or a communications-related field.
- Excellent English writing skills. Must be able to identify core and newsworthy issues in a particular story, develop story angles, and write for different audiences.
- Excellent Chinese reading and Mandarin aural comprehension. Must be able to synthesize information in Chinese and English to shape and present stories in written English.
- Strong Chinese-to-English translation and translation editing skills.
- Familiarity with, and interest in, China and human rights issues.
- Experience with social media and web editing a plus.
- The candidate must be well-organized, detail-oriented, cooperative, and a self-starter who is comfortable handling multiple tasks and able to work under pressure.
Compensation
Salary commensurate with experience.
