Toronto Star: What can the protests achieve?

But, says Sharon Hom, executive director of Human Rights in China, in an interview from New York: "It's clear they have completely miscalculated. The demonstrations have exposed the deadly Chinese tactics of control at a time when China has promised to be a responsible host of Olympic Games that are intended to respect human dignity and peace."

In spite of Beijing's tough rhetoric on Tibet, Hom says, "pressure is growing in many countries, and there is growing sympathy with the protests. Chinese voices are also being raised. It is important that the international community rejects the attitude that nothing is being accomplished by the demonstrations."
