But the wrestler Patricia Miranda and the swimmer Tara Kirk had other ideas. They said they were contemplating demonstrating their support at the Olympics for causes like the plight of the Darfur region of Sudan.

Miranda, a bronze medalist at the 2004 Olympics, planned to do something more drastic and visible, particularly if she returned to the medals stand. As a student at Yale Law School, she worked with a group called Human Rights in China, and she said she was passionate about the lack of informational freedom in China.
"A small, symbolic gesture would generate a lot of conversation,"said Miranda, speaking about what she would do on the medals stand if she was able to get there. "When you get your 15 minutes of fame, when you have that platform, you can do something really positive."
