Jiangsu Citizen Gu Yimin Arrested for “Inciting Subversion of State Power”

June 18, 2013

Sources told Human Rights in China that Gu Yimin (顾义民) was formally arrested on June 14 by police in Changshu, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, on suspicion of “inciting subversion of state power.”

Gu’s wife, Xu Yan (徐燕), told HRIC that Gu was taken from his place of work by police on June 1, just days after he posted online photographs related to the June Fourth military crackdown on the 1989 Democracy Movement and submitted an application to march on June 4 to mark the 24th anniversary of the crackdown.

Xu said, “If these two actions could constitute ‘inciting subversion of state power,’ then this regime must be really fragile and easy to subvert—any citizen can subvert it!”

Xu added, “My husband was only 11 years old when June Fourth happened, and I was only three! He did what he did in the hope that more people get to know about the history that is gradually being forgotten. My husband once told me that the government massacred patriotic college students in 1989.”
