余英时:“六四”30周年感言——致中国8964三十周年华盛顿纪念会(图)

六四民主运动三十年后的今天,中国大陆已经沦为有史以来最严酷的极权国家,并运用种种最新科技来摧毁人民的言论与行动的自由。对于源远流长的文明中国和中国人而言,这是一个不能容忍的奇耻大辱。我们今天纪念六四,便是为了彻底消灭这一耻辱,因此必须同时向两大目的奋进:

第一,我们要运用一切可能的方式,如撰述、回忆、会议等等,将六四的真实历史揭示出来,保存在一代又一代中国人的记忆之中。

第二,现代中国人集体而又自觉地追求民主,是从100年前的“五四”运动开始的。“六四”在这一方面则直接继承“五四”而来。我们都清楚地记得,当年“六四”民主运动正是在“五四”70周年纪念大会中发展起来的。所以怎样不断深化中国人对于民主理念的认识和追求,更是纪念“六四”的中心任务!
