Human Rights in China 中国人权 | HRIC
Published on Human Rights in China 中国人权 | HRIC (https://www.hrichina.org)

The goal of all HRIC advocacy is to support domestic Chinese civil society and to advance international awareness of key cases and current issues in China.

To further these goals, our advocacy program both responds to urgent individual cases and advances long-term structural reforms, operating simultaneously at the domestic and international levels. Throughout our advocacy work, HRIC promotes results-oriented engagement by governments, international NGOs, the business community, and multi-stakeholder groups.

Our advocacy activities, which draw upon and complement our media activities, include: casework, trainings, public presentations and briefings, research reports, and engagement in international human rights monitoring processes and ongoing policy debates.

Key thematic focus areas include: rights defense, accountability and the end of official impunity, freedom of expression, access to information, and economic, social, and cultural rights. More information on specific program areas is available through the below links.

Our Work

Human Rights Defenders  [1]

HRIC supports human rights defenders through a combination of media work, individual casework, capacity building, provision of technology tools and platforms, and direct support in cases of extreme need.

June Fourth [2]

Since the military crackdown on democracy and labor activists in 1989, HRIC has supported domestic Chinese voices, especially the Tiananmen Mothers, pressing for a truth investigation, accountability, and compensation from the authorities. Specific activities include: press work, translation, production of multimedia resources, and participation in commemoration and solidarity activities

Policy [3]

HRIC’s policy work focuses on critical issues that impact the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms and the development of a diverse, flourishing civil society in China. Specific fora include: United Nations human rights bodies and processes, bilateral dialogues, national governments, and multi-stakeholder initiatives.

Outreach & Collaboration [4]

HRIC regularly collaborates with other NGOS and engages in outreach to policy think tanks, journalists, and academic, business, and scientific communities. Specific collaborative and outreach activities include: joint statements, fact finding missions and reports, cultural events, memorials, briefings and presentations to expert and general audiences.

HRIC 2008 Olympics Campaign  [5]

In 2003, HRIC launched a five-year monitoring and advocacy campaign focused on promoting compliance with Beijing's Olympic promises and other international human rights obligations before, during, and beyond the 2008 Olympic Games. The campaign produced information resources on key human rights challenges, including a 2008 Calendar that highlighted monthly actions to take on behalf of targeted defenders and issues.
