"Uphold the Bottom Line of the Rule of Law" -- an open letter to all delegates of the Twelfth National People’s Congress about the prosecution of New Citizens Movement advocates

March 2, 2014

Prior to the start of the 12th National People's Congress, the lawyers of Xu Zhiyong, Ding Jiaxi, Zhao Changqing, and other activists—who have been prosecuted for their participation in the New Citizens Movement—as well as domestic intellectuals, business people, and journalists, jointly issued an open letter to NPC delegates. In the letter, the more than thirty signatories strongly urge NPC delegates to face and deal with two major issues: the brutal suppression of New Citizens Movement activists’ constitutional rights, and the illegal restrictions placed on freedom of speech inside China. The signatories request that relevant departments immediately correct these erroneous practices to ensure the implementation of the Constitution and the law.
