June 2, Chicago: “Eternal Spring” Tiananmen 30th Anniversary Memorial Concert, hosted by Yang Fengshi (杨逢时),4:40pm, University of Chicago, Wentz Hall.

  • A memorial concert whose themes center on the June 4th. Intended both to remember the massacre as well as bring it to the attention of new audiences through music.

June 3, Yermo, California: Tank Man Sculpture Inauguration Ceremony, hosted by Humanitarian China 人道中国, 5pm, 37570 Yermo Rd, Yermo, CA 92398 (美国加州自由雕塑公园).

  • An inauguration of a new sculpture depicting the famous “tank man” held on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre.

June 3, New York: ChinaFile Presents: Erasing History — Why Remember Tiananmen, hosted by Chinafile, 6:30-8pm, Asia Society, 725 Park Avenue, NY, NY 10021.

  • Speakers: Nicholas Kristof (Columnist for The New York Times and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner), Zha Jianying (writer, journalist, and cultural commentator in both English and Chinese), and Orville Schell (Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at Asia Society) as they reflect on China’s collective ability to grapple with its past, and make progress towards its future, in light of its historical amnesia over events like Tiananmen.

June 3, Washington D.C.: China’s Repression Model: Tiananmen, Today, Tomorrow, hosted by National Endowment for Democracy, 12-2:30pm, 1025 F St NW Ste 800.

  • In commemoration of June 4th, policy makers, activists, and experts join together to discuss the need to confront and counter the persecution of China’s disenfranchised minority groups as well as challenge its model of repression. On-site registration is available as well as a live stream.

June 3, Washington D.C.: Tiananmen Square Massacre Candlelight Vigil, hosted by Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, 8:30-9:30pm, 300 New Jersey Ave NW at Victims of Communism Memorial (corner of New Jersey and Massachusetts Avenues NW, 20001).

  • Speakers will include witnesses of the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989.

June 3-4, Washington D.C.: “Suggested Readings” Government Floor Remarks, hosted by US Congress, evening June 3 into June 4, House and Senate Floors; Parliaments around the World.

  • Readings include a letter from the Tiananmen Mothers, Charter 08, and Liu Xiaobo’s essay: “I have no enemies: My Final Statement.”

June 4, Washington D.C.: Tiananmen Photo and Art Exhibit, hosted by Huang Ciping, 2:30-4:30, Rayburn House Office Building, Foyer (45 Independence Ave SW).

  • Guest speakers include speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Wei Jingsheng, Antoine Ripoll, Wang Dan, Wang Juntao, Ilshat Kokbore, Bob Fu, and Marion Smith.

June 4, Washington D.C.: Congressional Hearing, Tiananmen at 30: Examining the Evolution of Repression in China, organized by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China and the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, hosted by the House Foreign Affairs Committee, 10am-12pm, 2172 Rayburn House Office Building (45 Independence Ave SW).

  • Witnesses: Wu’er Kaixi (Tiananmen student leader and Founder, Friends of Liu Xiaobo), Fengsuo Zhou (Tiananmen student leader and Co-Founder and president, Humanitarian China), Mi Ling Tsui (Communications Director, Human Rights in China), Carl Minzner (Professor of Law at Fordham Law School), and Shanthi Kalathil (Director of the International Forum for Democratic Studies, National Endowment for Democracy).

June 4, Washington D.C.: 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre Rally of Remembrance, hosted by The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, 1:30-3pm, US Capitol West Lawn First Street SW & 1st Street NW Washington, DC 20004.

  • Features the premiere exhibit of the Tiananmen Mothers Portraits. Speakers: witnesses to the massacre, activists, and policymakers, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Jim McGovern, Congressman Chris Smith, Congressman Andy Levin, and Senator Marco Rubio.

June 4, Washington D.C.: 2019 NED Annual Democracy Awards Reception, hosted by the National Endowment for Democracy, 5-7pm, United States Capitol Building, Room HC-5 (First St SE).

  • The event will honor the efforts of various organizations that are confronting the Chinese regime’s authoritarian practices and, through these efforts, empowering Tibetans, Uyghurs, and Chinese Christians to defend their rights.

June 5, Washington D.C.: “Rule By Fear: 30 Years After Tiananmen Square” Hearing, hosted by the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, 10am-12pm, Dirksen Senate Office Building, SD-419 (50 Constitution Ave NE, 20002).

June 4, Toronto: AWW Free School Final: 6/4/89, hosted by the Gardiner Museum and the AWW Free School, 6:30-8pm, Gardiner Museum, 111 Queens Park, Toronto, ON M5S 2C7.

  • An onstage conversation with journalists and activists reflecting on the impact of the Tiananmen Square protests. Presenters and panelists will include Olivia Chow, Distinguished Visiting Professor at Ryerson and core member of the Toronto Association of Democracy on China, labor activist Winnie Ng, and journalists Doug Saunders and Jan Wong.

 

Hong Kong

May 31: Re-learning the ’89 Democratic Movement (許sir開講:六四三十,重新認識八九民運), hosted by Hong Kong In-Media, 7-9pm, 365 Hennessy Rd Wan Chai Hong Kong (灣仔軒尼詩道365號富德樓9樓).

  • “Who should be held responsible for June 4th” is the final lesson in a four-part sequence on the history of the Tiananmen Massacre and surrounding events brought to us by Mr. Hui Wai-Heng, a secondary school teacher who has read over 100 books about the massacre and written a book on the subject titled “六四十问,” to be published in May 2019.

June 2: Anniversary of the June-Fourth Incident Forum, hosted by the Students’ Unions of Higher Institutions, 6-10:00pm, Platform outside Haking Wong Building, Hong Kong University.

  • Participants include: Hong Kong Alliance Vice-chairperson Chow Hang and Hong Kong independence activists Wayne Chan, Tony Chung, and Baggio Leung.

June 4: “Vindicate June 4” March, organized by the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, 3pm, from the Southorn Playground to the China Liaison Office.

June 4: Candlelight Vigil (六四,三十周年燭光悼念集會), organized by the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, 8pm, Victoria Park Soccer Pitch.

June 4: Candlelight Vigil (六四,三十周年燭光悼念集會), 8:30pm, Kowloon, Freedom Fighter Monument at the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

  • Will feature as speakers Hong Kong activists who have been targeted by local authorities. Police assembly approval and use of the venue is pending.
