In a letter that the sender knew will not reach the recipient, defense lawyer Liu Weiguo told his client Xu Zhiyong, founder of the New Citizens’ Movement, that on the day he tried to visit Xu in detention, not only was his request denied but he himself was also taken away. He wrote that the authorities have yet to respond to his request for relevant case information. Liu also expressed his anger: facing state power, the law in China is so weak that the rights of lawyers to meet with clients and vice versa are consistently violated.
