Director Zhao Liang presents an astounding picture of how the mining, steel, and housing industries have shaped the landscape in Inner Mongolia and changed the lives of people who live and work there. Called “a feat of pictorial storytelling,” the only lines in the film are powerful monologues such as, “Going through dust, flame, tombs, and our devastated home, all of the sacrifices are turned into steel to build the paradise of desire.” Meanwhile, the sound of working trucks, expositions, steel mills, and the gasps of victims suffering from deadly lung disease bring viewers even closer to the monster: “After all, it is not a dream, it is us. We are the behemoth; we are his claws and teeth.”
