Sharon Hom, executive director of Human Rights in China, gave a forceful defence of the need for Western countries not to give up and prematurely declare Hong Kong a lost cause.

Hom said it is important to support Hong Kong residents who are suddenly subject to a law whose English translation is rife with errors and omissions, and for international allies to closely monitor Beijing’s implementation of it for compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.”
