Painful farewells—for now

2021年06月27日

On June 17, 2021, about 500 police officers raided the newsroom of Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy newspaper. They arrested five top executives, including its Editor-in-Chief Ryan Law. On the same day, the authorities froze HK$18 million ($2.3 million) of the assets of three companies linked to the newspaper, forcing it to close down its print and online operations in Hong Kong a week later. At 3 a.m. on June 24, in pouring rain, Hong Kongers started lining up to purchase the final edition of a beloved paper. We have collected some of farewell messages from the staff members in that edition.
