On September 17, HRIC Executive Director Sharon Hom joined three Hong Kong activists and a U.S.-based security expert in testimony before the Congressional-Executive Commission on China in a high-profile, and widely-reported hearing, “Hong Kong’s Summer of Discontent and U.S. Policy Responses.” (See Hom’s testimony.)
The hearing, led by CECC Chair Rep. Jamase McGovern and Co-Chair Sen. Marco Rubio, focused on the issues at the heart of three months of sustained anti-extradition protests in Hong Kong that have grown into a people’s movement involving millions of Hong Kongers and capturing worldwide attention: unchecked police brutality against protesters, deepening Beijing encroachment on freedoms in Hong Kong, and failure of mainland authorities to live up to its pledge for allowing genuine universal suffrage in Hong Kong.
